Happiness is about living each moment with love, joy, and gratitude. It is about appreciating the now and all it has to offer. Happiness should not be about chasing moments, it is right in front of us if we only open our eyes to it.
Happiness is often described as a state of mind. However, during tough times in your life, this can be hard to put into practice. Often in crisis, the focus is simply about trying to process events and feelings, which is important.
Happiness isn’t stagnant or consistent. As humans, we experience a range of emotions, which are all equally important as it makes us who we are. These experiences allow us to learn, grow and appreciate both the good and bad times in life.
I wish I could tell you the secret ingredient to happiness. The truth is there isn’t one. Happiness is about cherishing the beautiful moments in life. It’s about staying present and being appreciative, not attaching it to a certain event or goal. It is different for everyone.
Happiness cannot be earned or owned, it is not about what we own or have, it is simply about being content with what we have and where we are.
It is important to remember that you do not have to be happy all the time. That is unrealistic. But there are a few things you can do to be a little happier regardless of what is going on around you.
Making little changes in your day can help you deal with harder times head-on. You have everything you need within you to overcome any difficulty you may face. So embrace challenges knowing that they will pass, that you can get through it, and it will be OK.
1.Express daily gratitude
Practicing gratitude daily is crucial for setting your mindset for happiness. Being grateful is so powerful. There is no right or wrong way for expressing this. or any strict guidelines or limitations.
So how does it work? Practicing gratitude is a really simple exercise and can be done anywhere at any time. You could simply state three things you are grateful for before going to bed, which ends the day on a positive note. It could also be a beautiful way to start the day.
You can make a note of the things you are grateful for in a journal which is a great way to keep a record of it. You could say the things you are grateful for out loud or share them with those you love.
Start simple. Be grateful for the simple pleasures of life, the things that make you smile, and all the amazing things around you. Try to be grateful for something different every day.
Expressing gratitude allows you to see the beauty in the things around you which allows you to shine a little brighter everyday.
2. Great things take time to build- Don’t give up
Remember everything takes time, effort, and commitment. Be patient with yourself and enjoy the process.
Whether you embark on a new fitness journey, learn something new, or start a new business remember to be consistent and accountable.
Set yourself small goals you can work towards and big ones you hope to reach in the future. Vision boards and goal lists can be a great way to motivate you to keep going.
Waiting for happiness, as if it is something that happens to you, will only lead to disappointment. Be happy with what you have and remember you will get to where you want to be. Enjoy the journey and experience, because it is equally as important as the destination.
3. Say yes to things that feel right (don’t overthink everything)
Try not to be overcautious about everything. Trust your instincts and believe in yourself.
Your instincts can be a great indicator of when to take the leap and try something new or when to let loose and enjoy a new experience.
If someone wants to take you out and it feels right, go for it. If a new job opportunity comes your way and you know it’s what you have always wanted to do, take it. If moving to a new city or far away in the countryside is what you need, then do it. Don’t let the fear of change hold you back, do whatever feels right.
4. Be generous and give back
I find the best way to feel instantly happier is by helping others in times of need. Whether it is someone that could do with a smile or a chat or someone that is really and overwhelmed reach out.
Putting a smile on someone’s face can be instant gratification. Making someone’s day a little better and easier can be really rewarding.
Babysitting while a new mum gets a nap, buying someone a hot meal when they really need it or checking in with people with a simple phone call is easy to do but could mean the world to them.
A kind word or a connection on the street with someone through a smile can go such a long way if they are having a bad day. I truly believe what you give comes back to you.
Be aware of your own needs and ensure that you are taking care of yourself too. You can only give if you are at your best.
5. See challenges as opportunities
Unexpected challenges and changes can sometimes blindside you. But just like everything in life, the outcome of what life throws at us depends on how we view the situation and the steps we take to overcome them. Remember to take a step back, take a deep breath and try to approach the challenge using fresh eyes.
Challenges can be opportunities for learning something new, growing, and understanding yourself in a new way.
Embracing changes with this in mind can make them easier to approach and overcome.
6. Eat well, hydrate and rest- no compromises
Sometimes a good nutritious meal, a restful night’s sleep, and some fresh air can do wonders for how you feel.
When I am overcome with emotions or anxiety, I go through a checklist of elimination (much like I did with my children) of whether or not “it’s everything” I am upset about or if I am just overworked, overtired, and hungry.
Self-awareness and really tuning into your emotions and needs can make a big difference in your well-being.
It is so important to take care of yourself so that you can deal with situations in a better way, in a way that a well-looked after you would.
7. Remember the ups and downs life throws at us are natural and inevitable
If you accept this, remind yourself of it regularly, and then again some, you will be able to deal with the changes and challenges of life in a more manageable way.
The bad times pass to make way for better times whilst leaving us with valuable life lessons and opportunities for growth. The good times also pass us by so cherish them and fully embrace every smile, elating emotion, and the people you share life with. Create as many beautiful memories as you can to carry with you through the bad times.
8. Say no to harmful habits and toxic people
To be happier, you need to make active changes in your lifestyle. This includes staying away from things that make you feel bad and are bad for you and swap them for things that are good for you and make you feel better.
It is important to identify what changes you need to make that cater to your best interests. Swap unhealthy snacks for healthier ones. Make your schedule work for you. Turn a quick break into a productive one by getting fresh air or enjoying a good read.
Make small changes to your routine that give you the best start to the day and a relaxing end to the day. Just remember it takes commitment, persistence, and consistency to make changes in your life where you can confidently say no to harmful habits.
It is also really important to surround yourself with positive influences, people that support and love you as you are. People that leave you feeling good and have your back and are your greatest cheerleaders.
Anyone that makes you feel upset and anxious just by being around them is the type of person you need to stay away, from regardless of who they are and how long you have known them.
9. Stay connected to loved ones. (However, you can!)
Staying connected to those we love allows us to discover more about ourselves. Our loved ones give us a sense of belonging.
Make time to stay in touch with family, friends, and loved ones. A quick call or a simple message can do wonders for your soul. It can brighten up others’ day and make them feel special too.
Surrounding ourselves with the people we love can bring so much meaning and joy to our lives if we appreciate all they have to offer.
Knowing you have someone to turn to in times of need allows you to deal with life with confidence. Being the person your loved ones can come to is just as special.
10. Always take time for self-love and self-care
You should never feel guilty about taking time for yourself or nurturing your needs. Self-care allows for opportunities to indulge in all the things that make us happy.
Loving ourselves exactly as we are is empowering. It allows us to choose ourselves, discover who we are, and embrace our flaws.
Self-awareness is crucial for self-care and self-love as it allows us to navigate through our emotions. Having a better understanding of ourselves allows space for healing and growth.
When you are feeling overwhelmed, take a pause and turn all attention to yourself. Think about how you feel and where you feel it in your body. Allow yourself to process your feelings before letting them go.
Nurture your needs and take accountability for the changes you need to make to honor yourself.
Do something that perks you up, take out those special bath oils, make yourself your favourite drink, spritz on your favourite perfume, read a good book, pray, go out with your friends… whatever it is that you need (and only you know what that is) don’t wait for someone to do it for you.
Be your own best friend, take yourself out on the most amazing dates, be there for yourself so you can deal with the things around you.
These are just some of the things I do to be a little bit happier every day. I want you to know that you are already exceptional, unique, and worthy of happiness. Whatever makes your day better, embrace it.
Happiness is inner peace and being ok with who you are, what you have, and where you are in life so that whatever comes next for you, you can really appreciate it. Adding to what you already are and what you already have.
I would love to know what things make you truly happy so please leave a comment below!
