5 Tips to Survive The Dreaded Exam Season!

The good news is that we’re on the home stretch of the academic year and the Summer break is in sight.

However, the not so great news is that in order to get there you’re going to have to knuckle down, get into study mode and revise for the coming Exams. If you want to do well, there are no short cuts, no hacks I can offer or miracle cures.

The reality is, if you want to do well, you are going to have to work hard but do it smart! Here are my tips to survive the Exam period!

Plan a Study schedule with good breaks and STICK TO IT!

This is literally the key to your success. You know yourself better than anyone so think about when you work the best, are you a morning bird or night owl?

Make sure you study in blocks with breaks in between. Think about what you could do during these breaks so that they are productive and really give you a chance to refresh and get back into studying.

The best way to start is think about what subjects you need to study for the most, allocate time accordingly and think about your exam dates to make sure you have given yourself enough time to prepare for them.

During study periods switch off your phone or put it out of site. It is so easy to check in with others or get onto social media, check out a Youtube video etc that takes away your focus. The aim is persistence over procrastination!

Create a calm study environment!

There is nothing worse than trying to study in a chaotic mess! Make sure all your study materials are organised and accessible.

Its important you have all the reading material you need to hand and that your class/ lecture notes are up to date (get them for classmates if theres any gaps).

Does your Laptop charger need replacing? Are you out of pens? Small details make big differences so get organised.

Clean out your study area so that its not a stressful environment. Get rid of clutter. Get scented calming candles if thats your thing. Whatever makes you feel more relaxed and helps you concentrate get it done!

Keep a window open to air out the room and so that you are getting some air even if your coped up in your room!

Eat well, Hydrate and Sleep!

In order to work at your full potential it is so important to take care of yourself. Sometimes it’s easy to get lost in studying and forget when you last had a drink of water or a bite to eat.

Your schedule should include food breaks.

Try to have a nutrient rich and varied diet to keep your immune system in check and take supplements if you feel particularly drained. Keep good, healthy snacks (like fruits and nuts etc) and a bottle of water near you at all times to help you focus and keeps you energised.

It also gives you no excuse to get up and waste time in the kitchen when you are peckish but should be studying!

You can keep an alarm on your phone to remind you to drink water or make use of apps that monitor how many cups of water you have had. As a general rule drink whenever you get thirsty and waking up to a glass is a great way to start the day.

Sleep and getting enough rest is vital if you want to study efficiently and absorb information effectively. Being over worked and over tired means you are less likely to be working at your full potential.

Keep sane by Working out!

You probably have so much to studying to do, this might be the last thing on your mind! But If you structure your studying properly and stick to the schedule this is a great time to add in a new workout routine!

As long as you prioritise your study time, exercise is a beneficial way to supplement revision! It keeps you energised and alert, is a great way to get rid of bad energy, feel good and relieve stress by producing endorphins which also help you sleep better during this anxiety filled period!

You could go for a run, take up relaxing yoga, do sports or hit it hard at the gym. Find your mojo, think about what type of exercise appeals to you the most and go for it!

Don’t Alienate yourself!

Take time to catch up with family and friends during this stressful period.

Schedule in upcoming events and think about which ones you can realistically go to and which ones you might have to miss.

Avoid crazy all night parties but at the same time its important to catch up with friends/family over a coffee or good meal. You could organise study groups with people you work well with or even schedule a work out session together.

Final Thoughts:

Remember that this is a stressful time but you will get through it and it’s all about balance.

Study hard but take good breaks.

Eat well but treat yourself to a pizza now and again.

Focus on completing all the tasks for the week but make time for socialising and catching up with loved ones.

Whatever the outcome, whatever your goals, be proud of the work you have put into your studies. Remember that if things don’t go as you planned thats ok too.

This is an important stage of your life but it also isn’t the be all and end all. You will carve your own path to your destination, just enjoy the journey!

reflect. love. heal Always
