During a time filled with so much uncertainty, no clear answers or deadlines and ever changing advice, it can be so easy to feel overwhelmed, anxious and worried.
Technology has been a great way to stay in touch with loved ones through video calls and messages.
Our phones and laptops and all the amazing apps they offer have become the way of communication we are heavily dependant on during lockdown.
Yes, it’s not the same as face to face contact and being able to reach out and hug your loved ones, but all the same it is an amazing option that has become a blessing.
Whether its a check in call, sharing funny moments, video calls for special events and parties where we can all be a part of something important or simple things like celebrating milestones of a new baby and sharing new recipes have all helped us connect with others virtually.
Many of us have used this time to up-skill ourselves.
We have had access to endless amazing online courses, some have learnt a new language and most of us have used endless tutorials to DIY, cook something new, educate our children through online platforms and so much more!
However having access to all this technology at just the tips of our fingers can have a downside that many of us have experienced.
Too much negative information and checking the news constantly can feed our anxiety and overwhelm us with negative thoughts that can have a detrimental effect on our mental wellbeing.
There has been a lot of untrue information being passed around that has placed people in a state of panic.
Many of us have been receiving endless messages and videos of conspiracy theories about the root causes of Covid-19, where it originated from, what is happening behind closed doors, that it isn’t real, or worse still, its the “apocalypse”.
Stay away from anything that does not serve your wellbeing, that isn’t information supported by facts and anything that increases your anxiety levels as it is not worth investing your time in.
It might help to mute notifications for a while, limit the amount of time you are spending on verified news outlets and put your boundaries in place by asking people politely yet firmly that you would appreciate not receiving such messages.
Download beneficial apps that help you relax, clear your thoughts and quiet your worries.
When you do feel like it is all a bit too much, talk to someone.
Allow yourself the time to have a cry and release it all if that it what you need.
Prayer can be a powerful source of comfort if you are a person of faith.
Exercise. Yoga is particularly beneficial to help you find a calm space to get lost in and focus on your breathing.
And sometimes you need to remember to do just that….breathe nice deep inhales and slow calm exhales, letting go of everything that does not serve, you that you are holding on to.
Remember we are all experiencing something new and unknown so there is no right or wrong way to deal with this.
But it is important to focus on your wellbeing and if you are having a difficult day, recognise that you will have better ones and just focus on getting through the day, the next few hours or even the next coming minutes.
As confusing and endless as this all seems, we will get through this and if you haven’t already been told I want you to know that you are doing amazing and I am so proud of you!
